About the Helix

The Helix Magazine is a biannual student-run publication from
Central Connecticut State University.

In the Fall and Spring semesters, members of the literary magazine from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) work together to publish select work ranging from art to literature. The Helix publishes pieces submitted not only from students on campus but from people within the community as well as all over the nation and across the globe. The pieces are selected, edited, produced and published by members of the magazine. Any undergraduate attending the university can become a member of the staff, helping to select, edit and help with the final publication of the magazine.

Central's first literary magazine, A Link in the Normal Chain, was published on February 7, 1855 when CCSU was the New Britain Normal School. The Pioneer appeared in 1901 with a six-woman editorial staff and the note 'To be published every month by the senior class.' In 1933, the New Britain Normal School had become the Teachers College of Connecticut; by the late 1940s, The Pillar was being published every spring. From the mid-fifties to the early seventies (it was known as) Contemporary. In 1959, Teachers College developed into Central Connecticut State College and was granted the status of State University in 1983, and thus the Helix was created.
